Now I love my iphone and my laptop as much as the next person. I quite fancy a kindle, and I’m a confirmed tweeter. But for all this modern tech, I am being seduced by something as old as paper and ink – I’m getting hooked on print.
I spent last Saturday at Northern Print in Ouseburn, on my first solo printmaking mission.
Having completed a two-day course in screenprinting in July, I was deemed skilled enough to be let loose to go it alone. Luckily the wonderful Helen was on hand to remind me what to do and give me her pearls of wisdom about all things from keeping ink wet, to techniques for lining up the different layers of colour.
The day passed in a happy blur of activity and I managed to complete a three colour print based on a photograph I took recently of a particularly romantic supper by the Charles Bridge in Prague.
Print is particularly hot in the north east at the moment, as the International Print Biennale is happening here from 17 September to 19 November. There’s a range of exhibitions and events in lots of partner galleries. Many of the artworks on display are for sale, and there’s help on hand if you want to find out how to start a collection of print, so head to one of the participating galleries to buy a catalogue and get into print!

Lovely blog. I did a wood engraving course at Northern Print two years ago and loved it
