Special Services: Ash Wednesday

@ Durham Cathedral

01 March 2017

All day

Our Lenten journey begins as Palm crosses from Palm Sunday of the previous year are burnt, and their remaining ashes are blessed. The sign of the cross is made on our foreheads using the ashes at services throughout the day, for those who wish, and is a sign of penitence and a symbol of mortality. Participants resolve to turn away from sin and be faithful to Christ.

Ash Wednesday Services:
7.30am – Holy Communion and the Imposition of Ashes
8.45am – Morning Prayer
11.30am – Lenten Address
12.30pm – Holy Communion and the Imposition of Ashes
5.15pm – Solemn Evensong
7.30pm – Sung Eucharist for the Beginning of Lent and the Imposition of Ashes
