The Late Shows

The North East’s fantastic free culture crawl, The Late Shows, is back again for the third year running and this year it's bigger, better and even longer.

On Friday 15 May and Saturday 16 May 2009, NewcastleGateshead’s cultural scene will be exploding into life as The Late Shows hit the streets for an entire weekend.

Over 20 popular cultural venues, usually closed in the evening, are staying up late. See these venues in a whole new light as they invite you in after-hours for a weekend packed full of interactive events and unique entertainment.

Some of the venues taking part will include Waygood Art Boutique on Saturday where visitors can watch the newly developed performance by Sally Madge and Carole Luby and explore their ongoing obsessional relationship with food and its production.

Over at the Discovery Museum, as in previous years, the Great Hall will be transformed into a cinema for the evening to bring visitors the chance to see a blockbuster film, of which the title will be announced soon, on Friday and Saturday.

On both evenings join The Mushroom Works and explore the frivolous side of life and art with the Let Them Eat Cake exhibition and join in the Have your cake and eat it! sugar craft workshop and make your very own culinary masterpiece, plus raise a tea-cup (filled with fizz) to the mighty cup-cake.

Tyneside Cinema is well known for being the home of great movies, but did you know that it is also the home of ghosts and ghouls galore? Built on the site of a former monastery on Pilgrim Street, the Tyneside has had its fair share of spooky sightings over the years, and for The Late Shows on Saturday you’ll get the chance to take part in ghost hunts and late night screenings. More details to follow in the run up to the evening and pre-booking is essential on 0845 217 9909. Charges apply to film and ghost hunt.

With many other events taking place over the weekend, The Late Shows has something for everyone to try.
