The Tyneside’s Birthday Newsreel
Screening daily until Thu 8 March
February 1937. Gaumont British News.
75 Years to the day! A compilation of clips from the first month that the Tyneside opened in 1937.
On 1st February 2012 it will have been exactly 75 years since the Tyneside Cinema opened as Newcastle’s News Theatre. Since May last year we’ve been celebrating our 75th anniversary, and in May this year our celebrations will culminate in a weekend of fantastic film fun. With this newsreel we mark the 75th anniversary of the day this cinema opened its doors for the very first time, and screen a selection of the stories that were shown in its first month.
The selection includes the launch of Thomas Sopwith’s motor yacht ‘Philante’, Emperor Hirohito inspecting Japan’s military forces, to greyhound racing, floods in Kentucky and the dark shadow of war looms as Parliament decides to expand Britain’s military might.
