This chilling debut feature from director Markus Scheinzer, who has worked on the likes of The White Ribbon and The Counterfeiters, is a tense portrait of how seemingly mundane lives may hide the darkest of secrets. Michael is a timid insurance agent, a seemingly bland loner with a secret: he’s holding a ten-year-old boy captive in a locked room in his basement. Chronicling a five-month period, Scheinzer’s film subtly deals with this very difficult subject matter, avoiding making an exploitative movie in favour of a unique, brilliantly acted dark drama.
