This Summer we invite you to come and celebrate the two fantastic exhibtions at the Laing; Family Matters: the Family in British Art and Quentin Blake: as Large as Life. There will be a wide range of free, drop-in classes available including themed events for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee to circus performances involving fire eating and juggling. Something for everyone to enjoy!.

Wednesday 25 July
Family Circus Day
10.30am – 12.30pm & 1.30pm – 3.30pm
Kick off the summer with some circus fun! Come and see circus performers Lunatricks juggling & fire eating. Make colourful bunting to decorate the gallery and have your face painted to become part of the circus party!

Wednesday 1 August
Quirky Quentin Characters
10.30am – 12.30pm & 1.30pm – 3.30pm
Work with illustrator Bethan Laker to create a family portrait from watercolours and ink, in the style of Quentin Blake. Bring a family photo with you for inspiration!

Wednesday 8 August
Family Feast
10.30am – 12.30pm & 1.30pm – 3.30pm
Find a place at our giant family banquet and add your artwork to the feast. Or, make your own plate of scrumptious arty treats out of clay to take home.

Wednesday 15 August
Aliens have landed!!
10.30am – 12.30pm & 1.30pm – 3.30pm
Take a trip to Planet Zog with the work of Quentin Blake. Make a paint splat alien to add to our wall frieze or make a family of alien puppets to take away.

Tree-mendous Wednesday

Add your own family portrait to our giant sculptural tree installation, or make your own mini version to take home.

Arty Party

Come along to the Laing with your little ones and explore art in a fun and relaxed way. Sessions are one hour and include a story, an art/craft activity and a snack.
£2.50 per child, £1 each additional child

For younger children to play in a creative safe space.

ARTventure Backpacks
(For all the family)
Borrow a Backpack and embark on an ARTventure in the gallery. Our Backpacks are full of exciting hands-on activities to help you explore the galleries. Backpacks are free to borrow and do not need to be booked. They are available every day from the reception desk.
