Not so long ago, history books were mostly about men and their activities – in war, politics or economic development. The lives of women and their contributions to society were often left out of the historical record, even though they made up half the population! These days, people are much more interested in finding out about everybody, including the effects that historical events had on ordinary women, as well as those who helped to shape the course of history.
In our collections at Northumberland Archives, there are stories of many remarkable women. Rich or poor, privileged or unfortunate, leading traditional or pioneering lives, in wartime or in peace, these women made a huge difference to their families, friends and to wider society.
This small exhibition celebrates the lives of some Northumbrian women, from the brave servant girl who fought off vicious burglars to the pioneering aviatrix, as well as showing off some of the wonderful images of women we have at Woodhorn.
