The Theatre Royal, opened in February 1837 and a Grade I listed building, remains one of the most historic, cultural landmarks in the country and continues to dominate Newcastle’s Grainger Town. Performances at the Theatre Royal included the biggest and brightest West End musicals, thought provoking drama from the world’s leading playwrights, contemporary dance from acclaimed choreographers including Matthew Bourne and Akram Khan – not mention the North’s favourite pantomime. Theatre Royal presents over 370 performances to around 310,000 people each year and is the regional home for Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, Opera North and Rambert Dance Company.
At the beginning of July 2006 the theatre will be closed for three months whilst development work takes place to extend the stage and to extend the theatre's facilities into the old Barclays Bank building on Market Street.
