mima is one of the UK's leading art galleries, based in Middlesbrough. The gallery exhibits, commissions and collects world-class modern and contemporary art and craft from 1900 to the present, and is a centre of excellence for drawing, contemporary jewellery and ceramics.

The landmark building designed by Erick van Egeraat Architects, opened to international acclaim in 2007. Admission is free.
 
mima hosts a changing programme of exhibitions, featuring work by internationally acclaimed artists. The gallery brings together the town's art collections for the first time, with selected works from the collection showcased annually. Alongside this, is rolling programme of events and activities; most are free.
 
Activities include family events, lectures, artist talks, tours, guides, films, performances, opportunities to meet and work with artists, music, and poetry events. mima is a partner in Plus Tate, a major national collaborative arts initiative for the visual arts involving Tate and 18 of the UK's most dynamic arts institutions. mima is part of Middlesbrough Council and is funded by Middlesbrough Council and Arts Council England.

Café/Shop

Café mima serves hot and cold food, sandwiches and light meals, cakes and pastries and a wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, including Illy coffee.

Accessibility

mima is fully accessible. Wheelchairs are available on request. Disabled parking is available, with blue badges and motorcycles FREE. We try and make our print materials available in Braille, large print and other languages on request. Paid parking is available at the back of mima. Parking is FREE on Thursdays after 4pm, mima's late night of opening (until 7pm). Toilets and changing facilities are available, and toddler toilets/sinks are available on the second floor. Guide and hearing dogs are welcome. café mima is a great place to meet for lunch or drinks, or to stop and have a rest while you are visiting the galleries. The café welcomes families, and offers a wide range of food suitable for children, high chairs and bottle warming facilities.

Directions

By road From the A19 North and South, take the A66 West and follow signs for Middlesbrough. Leave the A66 at the exit signed for the University of Teesside. At the roundabout take the 2nd exit onto Marton Road (cineworld and pizza hut are on your left). At the crossroads turn right onto Borough Road. Continue down Borough Road and turn right into Melrose Street and follow the road round the bend. Our car park is on your right. By train mima is a short 10-minute walk from Middlesbrough train station. As you leave the train station turn left and walk down to Albert Road. Then turn right and walk towards the town centre. We are situated on your left. By air Durham Tees Valley International Airport is 20 minutes away from mima. By foot The main entrance to visitors is via Centre Square facing Albert Road (A172).
