Hadrian's Wall was constructed over a period of six years by order of the Emperor Hadrian who came to Britain in AD 122. According to one of Hadrian's Roman Biographers, it was built to "separate the Romans from the Barbarians" - a feat it achieved for over 250 years. Today, the area between South Shields and Ravenglass is studded with forts, milecastles, temples and turrets. These 2000 year old remains are brought to life brilliantly by museums, reconstructions and fascinating visitor centres, all with something different and all waiting to be discovered.
The extensive history of Hadrian's Wall is fabulously illustrated by its many forts and museums. Although there are many to be found all along the Wall, the highest concentration of Roman forts and museums is in the area between Chollerford and Gilsland, which lies within the natural beauty of Northumberland National Park.
Here you can see a multi award-winning fort, Vindolanda, and the best preserved Roman Cavalry Fort in Britain, Chesters, as well as some of the best preserved sections of Wall.
Segedunum Roman Fort and Bath House in the east and Birdoswald, Tullie House and Senhouse Museum in the west, amongst many others, also retain the best remaining evidence from the period of Roman occupation and offer visitors unique and inspiring insights into that time.
