Berwick Visual Arts

Berwick Visual Arts is an initiative managed by The Maltings (Berwick) Trust, which also manages The Maltings Theatre & Cinema.

We are committed to developing a welcoming and engaging environment of exceptional, ambitious visual art to inspire, challenge and encourage learning and enjoyment for those who work, visit and live in Berwick-upon-Tweed and the communities it serves.

We achieve this aim through a curated programme of exhibitions, artists residencies, events and projects. We programme exhibitions at The Granary Gallery which aims to be recognised as a venue that shows work from the best regional, national and international art collections and also The Gymnasium Gallery which we commission and touring high quality contemporary and conceptual work from regional, national and international artists.

Our residency programme offers the opportunity for 2 mid career artists per year to live and work in Berwick to develop their practice and respond to the town itself.

Since we were establised in 2012 over 65,000 people have visited our exhibitions and events or taken part in a workshop or activity with an artist.

In a ‘Cultural Mapping of the visual arts sector in Northumberland’ commissioned by the Northumberland Strategic Arts Forum in April 2014, Berwick Visual Arts was identified as an ‘exemplary organisation’ that offers ‘challenging and thought provoking work.’

We also deliver visual arts development for young people across Northumberland on behalf of Northumberland Arts Development.
