The earliest Jewish settlement in Gateshead is believed to date from the nineteenth century. Today, Bensham is home to a significant Orthodox Jewish community, and has several Jewish education institutions of international acclaim.

This talk by Joseph Schleider of the Jewish Community Council of Gateshead, will include an overview of Anglo Jewish history, including migration between the1880s and 1914. Since then, provincial Jewish communities across the UK have generally contracted, with the notable exception of Gateshead: come along and try to discover some of the possible reasons for this.
