Watercolours and drawings reveal Newcastle’s changing character over the centuries. The pictures include panoramic views of the city and scenes showing the transformation of the Tyne and the city centre. Newcastle working people are represented with early 19th-century pictures of keelmen, a miner and female builders’ labourers, as well as early ship building on the river bank. Devastating events, like the Great Frost of 1784 and the Great Fire that destroyed much of the quaysides of Newcastle and Gateshead in 1854, are included. Entertainments like an international rowing match on the Tyne in the early 19th century and a 1930s’ football match at St James’ Park are also on show. Artists include TM Richardson, JW Carmichael, William Bell Scott, John Dobson, John Storey, Byron Dawson, and contemporary artist Angela Hughes.
