On Wednesday 16 May, policeman turned forensic artist and author, Norman Kirtlan, will give a talk based on his latest book, Death From….

Like his previous works, Murderous Wearside 1 and 2 and Fetch the Black Maria, Death From …delves into genuine historical murders.

This time, Norman, examines the role of the coroner and some of the strange and tragic County Durham cases Victorian coroners were required to deal with.

As an artist with Northumbria Police, Norman helped solve dozens of serious crimes by producing sketches of suspects from descriptions given by victims and witnesses.

Following his retirement in 2006, he worked with French and Dutch forensics teams before setting up his own forensic imaging firm on Tyneside.

An Evening with Norman Kirtlan is part of a programme of talks, workshops and events at The Word as part of its second WRITE Festival, which will take place from Saturday 12 to Friday 25 May.
