The 150th anniversary of the Durham Miners’ Association will be celebrated at a special service of Evensong, together with the people and communities of the region’s mining industry, past and present.

On 20 November 1869 a group of delegates from across the Durham Coalfield met at the Market Tavern in Durham and founded the Durham Miners’ Assocation. Within 50 years, the union had gained 200,000 members, organised to improve the lives of the people of County Durham, established the Durham Miners’ Gala, and built its magnificent headquarters at Redhills.

All are welcome to join us at this special service, which will be the culmination of the Lights of the North appeal. This fundraising campaign, a partnership between Durham Cathedral and Durham Miners’ Association, seeks to remember and celebrate the individuals and communities of the Durham Coalfield. Find out more and donate to the campaign at Just Giving when it launches on 10 September.
