Cherry Lewis from Bristol University reveals how, as a young man of just 21, Arthur Holmes (1890-1965) lay in a tent in Mozambique, recovering from malaria, and wrote of his ambition to develop a geological timescale that would ultimately date the age of the Earth. When, in 1924, he established the Department of Geology at the University of Durham, he began to pursue his dream which took the rest of his life. This talk will cover Holmes’ time in Durham and his remarkable quest to date the age of the Earth.
