What time is it? We are surrounded today by time signals through the radio, telephone and computers. But how did people check the time before this existed? In this lively illustrated talk, David Rooney tells the tale of how Greenwich Mean Time was distributed from the Royal Observatory Greenwich, focusing on the work of the Belville family who sold it to Londoners using a specially corrected pocket chronometer. Dr Rooney is a Keeper at the Science Museum, London, and formerly Curator of Timekeeping at the Royal Observatory. He writes and speaks widely on the history of technology and is the son of a prominent South Shields clockmaker.
