NIGHTS LESS ORDINARY COME ALIVE AT LIFE

Posted on July 11th 2022 by Whats on Northeast

Offering the ultimate antidote to a conventional night-out, Life’s adult-only events will provide a fun, quirky and thought-provoking experience.  Encouraging lively frank debate where no subject is taboo, they also offer the chance to explore the science centre at twilight or make-and-create with a beer in hand!

The season opens with Science Speakeasy: Who Owns Space? on Thursday 14 July, lifting the lid on the big issues and ethics around 21st century Space exploration in a spectacular yet informal setting. A stellar panel of experts from the region’s universities will lead the debate. They are astrophysics guru Dr David Rosario; space law expert Professor Christopher Newman; extragalactic researcher Dr Fionagh Thomson and regional Space entrepreneur, Ralph Dinsley from Northern Space and Security. They will explore everything from the unregulated billionaire space race, to liberties taken by big business and the problematic rise of space junk. The event will take place under Life’s mesmerising 7-metre diameter replica of planet Earth, Gaia, where participants can enjoy a drink while taking part (if they wish) in a topical, no holds barred debate.

Linda Conlon, Chief Executive of Life said: “Our new adults-only events programme is for those with a thirst for a different kind of night out – a quirky evening in an extraordinary setting, with a chance to take part in stimulating debate, and all with a science twist.  Nothing is taboo so if you’re easily offended, these events might not be for you!”

The programme continues on 14 September with Science Speakeasy: COP 26 One Year On where Life explores what’s changed since Glasgow’s critical climate summit in Autumn 2021 and whether climate fiction (cli-fi) in popular culture is a force for good or evil.

On 19 January, Speakeasy: Artificial Stupidity asks where the line should be drawn on artificial intelligence. The event will weigh up the life-changing role AI can play against the inherent risks of a robotic takeover.

On 8 December ‘22, Life’s Adult Lates return offering the freedom of the science centre to make and create after-hours.  Festive skating, gift-making and ‘carol-okey’ will be on the menu for the December event.

All adult events begin at 7.30pm, and a pay bar will be available.  Tickets are from only £5 but availability is limited so early booking is strongly advised.  Tickets can be purchased for the first Speakeasy Who Owns Space? on the Life website www.life.org.uk/who-owns-space
