The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe @ Sunderland Empire: REVIEW

Posted on December 1st 2021 by Whats on Northeast

The show followed the original story perfectly, making it easy for younger audiences to follow and bring back childhood nostalgia for others. The actors playing Lucy (Karise Yansen) Susan (Robyn Sinclair) Peter (Ammar Duffus) and Edmund (Shaka Kalokoh) all brought each of the Pevensie’s to life and stayed true to the personalities of each character. Samantha Womack wowed as The White Witch with extravagant costumes and a fierce aura, true to The White Witch villain we know from the book and film adaptation.

A fantastic touch was the chorus playing musical instruments whilst acting as their respective characters. The music was simply beautiful and the singing even more so with impeccable harmonies and passion injected into the roles and instruments they were playing.

The sets were also incredible and manipulated by the cast into different settings seamlessly. The puppeteers also added a magical touch with scenes including Professor Kirk’s cat, the Pevensie’s catching the evacuee train and most of all, Aslan. Aslan’s mechanical costume was beautifully crafted and the puppeteers did a fantastic job of making the lion seem lifelike.

Overall the show was a blast from my past personally as this take on a childhood favourite brought back the magic. This performance was excellent for younger and adult audiences and I would recommend it highly to get you and your loved ones ready for Christmas!

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is at the Sunderland Empire until Saturday 4th December.
